SOMA Wolverine

By

We have just received stock of the new SOMA Wolverine. It is as amazing in the flesh, as it is on paper.

I always have a ‘fantasy’ build on the go in my mind and since learning of the Wolverine 6 months ago, it has been based on this frameset.

The Wolverine is ostensibly a ‘Monster Cross’ bike, which just means a cyclocross bike that can comfortably accommodate tyres bigger than 35c. In the same way that ‘cross bikes such as the SOMA Double Cross and Surly Cross Check are versatile bikes, a Monster Cross bike is even more flexible by extending the range of what the the bike can do off-road.

SOMA have capitalised on this versatility by fitting Tange sliding dropouts that make setting the bike up geared, single speed or hub geared a cinch. The dropouts cleverly also incorporate a ‘split’ that enables you to run a Gates belt drive. You can even fit Rohloff specific Paragon Machine Works dropouts.

To quote SOMA, “Its geometry is stable enough for off road touring, but sporty enough for all-around adventure.”

Given its mixed terrain credentials, the Wolverine is only available with disc brake mounts. Until recently this would have meant Avid BB7 cable operated discs would have been the best brake that could be used with drop bars, but recent developments make a number of superior options now available – think Tektro Spyre, Shimano CX77 and the even newer Hydraulic STI compatible road disc brakes from Shimano and SRAM.

The first build (pictured above) is for Enduro Mag to do a long term test – it will initially be built up Gates Belt Single Speed with a bunch of nice SOMA bits.

The second one we’re building up is based on the new Shimano 5800 11sp wide range groupset with H Plus Son Archetype rims, White Industries rear hub and an SP Dynamo front hub with B+M light setup. True to form, duties for Ian’s Wolverine range from taking his child to daycare to of-froad adventures on the weekend.

We have incredibly limited stock of 54, 56 and 58cm frames, but can order others in. Come in to discuss a build and book a session on the fit bike to work out sizing. Unless you’re a 56cm, because that is the one I want for my ‘fantasy build’.

And did I mention that it is ‘Pumpkin’ orange?

  • Tange Prestige heat-treated CrMo front triangle; butted CrMo rear end
