We’ve just landed our first few Salsas for 2019. We were super keen to see the new Cutthroat in the flesh given it’s domination of the tour divide route so built one up Friday. One very eager customer took it home with him on Saturday before we even got a chance to show you all a few pics! For now we have the Fargo Apex and Cutthroat Apex bikes in stock. In December there are Vaya frames and complete bikes landing as well as Fargo frames with carbon Firestarter forks.
Some nice highlights for 2019 include internal dynamo wiring on carbon firestarter forks. This keeps cabling out of the way from knocks and scrapes that are inevitable on any tour. This fork also has boost spacing too so if you are looking to swap between suspension and rigid you can keep all those ‘standards’ the same!
The Bikes:
Fargo $3995
The Fargo has become a cult classic since its inception in 2010. A true Chameleon, capable of taking on just about every genre of cycling you want to throw at it. It’s the adventure bike before adventure bikes were a thing. Having owned one in the past I can say it is capable of 6 hour MTB races, 300km Audax Gravel events, multi week tours across Europe, short trips into the desert and short trips to the supermarket.
We chose to go for the Apex Hydro spec, hydro disc brakes for drop bars have certainly got to a level where we can now happily recommend them for backcountry adventures, the added stopping power and reliability far outweighs any potential for failure a long way from home.
It comes with BIG tubeless ready Maxxis Ikon 29×2.6 tyres which should allow you to roll over the gnarliest terrain with a load on board whilst still maintaining low rolling resistance. I’ve been running these tyres on my MTB and found them to have some for the beneficial dampening properties of a full size plus tyre but without the added rolling resistance. With 30mm internal rims you can choose any tyre size from 2.0 inch to 2.8 inch.
We have a size run of Fargo frames available too but get in quick!
There are also a few of last years Fargo GX still available for $3300.
Cutthroat $4295
Our first dive into the bike which has created insurmountable hype since its launch at the 2015 Tour Divide grand depart. Jay Petervary may not have been lucky enough to win on it that year but it certainly made an impact, with almost 25% of the 2018 field opting to ride a Cutthroat down the divide.
We opted to get the base model with Apex so that if anyone wants to customise it we are happy to strip it and build it to your specifications. The SRAM Apex 1x mated to the ever reliable TRP Spyre C is a great part spec with room to upgrade when and if the time comes.
Our first impression is that this is a road bike with monster truck wheels, and it just wants to go places – FAST! The wheel spacing has been kept as a standard road thru axle configuration, with a 100x15mm front and 142×12 rear. Whilst the Fargo is built to take a lot more load ,both models will enjoy very long days in the saddle, the Cutthroat however will just do it very fast! If you don’t want to load much gear on for your adventures and want to keep riding all day as fast as you can, day in day out, this is the bike to make it happen.
Vaya $2975
Road adventure, light touring, gravel day rides, the Vaya has you covered. One of our mechanics, Todd has been riding a Vaya since 2013 and it’s been on many multi week treks in distant lands as well as a lot of commutes around town and beyond.
This year it’s available with Shimano 105 R7000 11 speed and a big wide gear range to make light work of those gravel climbs on your next Audax ride. It comes painted in the awesome neon purple like last years Fargo, for some this might be a bit loud but we love it! The forks get the anything cage treatment and has moved to 12mm thru axle that is becoming the new standard for road and gravel bikes. The FSA sub compact gets you a 48/30T up front and the new R7000 allows for a 11-34T cassette.
We also have all sizes of this frameset coming too. Pricing is $1400 for frame and fork.
Bikes and Framesets due early December.
Warbird
Sorry everyone, we still had good stock of 2018 frames back when we ordered in May so reluctantly didn’t get any, there is a small opportunity to steal some from the US in a few weeks if you really want one, alternatively you can get last years model at a red hot price, call us for details.
Blackborow
For those looking to drag the kids to school during the week then head out into the far yonder on the weekend this might just be the ticket. Perhaps a month long trip in the desert is more your thing but you never quite could work out where to put all your stuff, behold the Blackborow. Stock is very limited and special order only so get in quick if this floats your boat!
How much is the blackborow?
Cheers
Lu
