“Klunkerella” – Velo Orange Klunker Build at MADE Australia.

The 90’s were a wild time, punk rock was beginning to fuse with techno, fashion choices were often loud, and many of the bike colour schemes at the time bore a similar resemblance. Mountain bikes were a pretty new thing, the R&D department for most companies were the team riders, technology was developing in leaps and bounds and each season a host of new parts hit the market. During this time a lot of quality steel frames were produced in Japan which brought mountain biking to the masses, and this is where you might come in to the picture.

Mountain bikes themselves have come a long way since then, but many of those rigid 26″ frames have found a new lease on life as versatile everyday bikes – think big volume slick tyres, mudguards, racks and wide comfy bars.

We are having a stand at MADE Australia to showcase Velo Orange Components and Accessories. So, we are on the hunt for a sweet old steel frame to adorn with modern Velo Orange goodies to transform it into the ultimate Neo Klunker!

Do you have an old mountain bike that you’re looking to breathe new life into, or one hiding in the back of the shed that you haven’t touched for 20 years?

Here is what we’re chasing:

  • 26″ Rigid Steel MTB Frame & Matching Fork (Preferably 1″ Threaded Fork)
  • Roughly 1980s to early 1990s
  • preferably Australian brand; ie Hillman, Cecil Walker, Apollo, Shogun
  • Good to Excellent Condition
  • The wilder the paint scheme, the better!
  • We’ll need it from Early May to Early July (the MADE Australia show is on the last weekend of June)

What’s in it for the owner of the donor frameset? You will receive the bike back as a complete build after the show, featuring lots of Velo Orange Parts and Accessories to keep!

To submit your frameset for consideration, please email info@commutercycles.com.au
With the details of your frameset, together with a bunch of photos (frame details/condition in particular) and please also include the frame’s story – did it belong to your Grandma, maybe you or your dad raced it?

Scroll through the bikes below, as we reckon they are some good references to set the vibe!
