Melburn Roobaix – SURLY bikes & OFF COURSE CHECKPOINT

Melbourne’s annual “Melburn Roobaix” event, held by FYXO eagerly cobbled its way through town last week on its 2024 installment.

This year, Surly Bikes and Off Course Bike Shop were event sponsors and we had a joint checkpoint mid-way along the route at our shop in Brunswick.
Riders passed from Leslie St through to the shop on Prentice St, via Greenspace, which was repurposed for the day as the “Surly Bikes Spooky Shortcut” flanked with foliage, smoke machine and creepy audio.

After passing through the shortcut, riders found themselves arriving here at Off Course, where they warmed themselves by the fire kegs, helped themselves to quartered oranges and took a photo with their riding buddies at the Surly Bikes “Peek-A-Boo” wall. Riders could choose to be one of the many Surly Bikes models personified, as either the Ogre, Icecream Truck, Krampus, Grappler or Straggler.
This was painted by our talented team members Caff and Kia. We reckon they did a wonderful job!

It was a wonderful opportunity to welcome riders both old and new to the shop, especially as we had just rebranded the shop two weeks prior. The stoked response and positive feedback we recieved regarding the rebrand was super encouraging.
Whether riders stopped for chats or to fix their flats, it was great to see so many smiling faces. At 20k’s into the ride, those mid-ride endorphins were really starting to kick in!

Not only is the Melburn Roobaix a great event that brings people together, it also celebrates a special vibe – gather your friends, wear and ride something fun, and leave any elitism at the door. There are no prizes for first place, everyone that shows up to brave the course and weather is a winner by default.

Thanks to FYXO for putting on such a great event, Surly Bikes for teaming up with us on this checkpoint, John Watson for capturing the event so well with The Radavist and most importantly, the riders that show up each year who make this event such a buzz with their infectous spirit and enthusiasm.

See you next year!

  1. Great ideas shown here, glad it went well. See you in November for my two yearly bike service assuming I make two yearly visits to Australia now that I have moved to France. 🙂
