Arkel Bags

We’ve just landed a bunch of great quality gear from Arkel based in Quebec, Canada. I’ve had my eye on their products ever since working in Montreal bike shops about 20 years ago. Back then their range mainly consisted of some incredibly well made pannier bags, the kind you only need to buy once and will last decades of abuse. In more recent times their catalogue has expanded to include some very well considered bikepacking gear and an urban range of backpacks.

There is a focus on sustainability in the product range with the core materials being either recycled, climate neutral or just so tough they reduce their carbon footprint through longevity. This range includes Ecopack: Constructed with REPREVE® rPET fiber, Ecopak fabric lasts longer, absorbs 80% less moisture, and has better UV resistance and color retention than traditional laminated nylon. The fabrics are also fluorocarbon-neutral (C0 DWR). They are waterproof, making bags made with Ecopak™ even more weather-resistant. X-Pac: Fabrics from X-Pac™ were originally manufactured for sailboats, but their exceptional properties make them perfect for the design of bicycle bags and panniers. They are 100% climate neutral and contain recycled, bio-based, or sustainably sourced materials. Cordura: Cordura® 1000D is a strong, tear-resistant nylon fabric used in military clothing and high-end outdoor gear. It’s made in the USA, now C0 DWR and breathable, reducing odor and moisture. Its longevity makes it eco-friendly.

It is refreshing to see a company investing back into their community like Arkel has. Since 2003 they have been involved with a social service programme for folks with intellectual disabilities and pervasive development disorders. They help with the assembly of the Cam-Lock mounting system, putting together user guides, cutting bungee cords and webbing, and much more every day! To quote their website “Each one of these amazing people contributes to Arkel’s success. Without their energy, laughter, and dedication, Arkel’s bags would have a little less soul.”

Arkel have used Old Man Mountain patented FLiPcage system across the two sizes of fork bags offered. These are available in a range of fun colours but I do really like the earth tones of mountain brown.

The Burrito roll is an innovative handlebar roll bag, a style that reminds me of St Bernard Resuce dogs in the Swiss alps. This one features a unique roll top system that allows for easy access to whatever you’ve thrown in for the days ride. Available in 2.5 and 4.5lt options and the same range of colours as the fork packs.

Arkel offer two frampack options in both waterproof and water resistant fabrics. Pictured here is the Xpac waterproof 5 litre bag on a 57cm Pelago Stavanger and a Taco top tube bag.

The Seatpacker is a fully integrated system that locks into the seat rail for added stability and easy of jamming all your gear in there. These are available in 9 and 15lt and a range of colours to suit your palate.

We have plans for expanding the selection but for now have a great range of their bikepacking bags available in store.
