Disk brake pads come in two main varieties:
Resin brake pads – also referred to as organic or semi-metallic pads – are made from a mix of fibers held together by resin. Typically, those materials are softer than their metal counterparts, which usually means they are quieter when braking, they also “bite” quite quickly. However, they can suffer from brake fade in extreme temperature conditions however and aren’t as great in the wet as metal pads.
Metal brake pads – sometimes called metallic or sintered pads – offer less fade at higher temperatures, perform better in the wet and last longer than resin, but are noisier than resin pads and don’t “bite” as quickly.
Fins – many new pads come with various mechanisms to help them dissipate heat quicker, normally in the form of alloy fins that stick out of the pads. Check your calipers for compatibility before upgrading to these!
