Chainrings

Chainrings are a key component in your bicycle’s drivetrain and gearing. They attach to the cranks of your bike and enable the power to be transferred via the chain to the rear wheel. Modern wide-range cassettes found on 1x drivetrain systems provide good versatility with the stock chainring supplied by the manufacturer for that bike. But if you’re custom building something, or wanting to change the focus of your riding then changing the chainring size is a great way to make the bike better suited to the type of riding you want to do. For instance if you’re mountain biking, loaded touring or commuting in a hilly area you generally want to favour lower (easier) gearing, and thus smaller chainrings (28-34T), to help get up steep hills with ease. The opposite happens with flat commuting, unloaded gravel/road riding, where a higher top speed at a sensible cadence is more important than low speed climbing and so larger chainrings (36-46T+) are used to shift the gearing range towards that end. Just watch out for those pinchy climbs! We stock a great array of chainrings from Shimano, Surly, Wolf Tooth, White Industries and others.
