Quill Stems

Quill stems are more common on older bicycles, particularly those with 1″ front forks. By utilising a single bolt at the apex of the stem, connected to a wedge at the bottom, the stem is snugly secured inside the fork.

Quill stem adapters use this same wedge-style system where the adapter meets the steerer tube, but at the apex of the adapter is a 28.6mm (1 and 1/8th inch) length of tube. This length of tube acts as a substitute for a modern 1 and 1/8th steerer tube, and allows you to attach modern threadless stems to older threaded-style forks.
