Surly 8-Pack Rack 2.0

$255.00

Most of you don’t need the cargo capacity to land a helicopter on your rack. Sometimes, all you want to do is grab a sixer, from the beer store on the way home, or pick up a nice bouquet of flowers.  For whatever the situation dictates, we offer the 8-Pack Rack. Made from the same tubular cromoly steel as our front and rear touring racks, the 8-Pack Rack is a solid pedestal upon which you may rest a handlebar bag, grocery bag, satchel… or whatever you use to carry your bowling ball around. The 8-Pack Rack attaches to most forks with mid-blade and crown eyelets. It uses stainless steel hardware and has the characteristic durability, versatility, and repairability all Surly products are known for. The 8-Pack Rack has lots of barrel braze-ons, so you can customize your cargo tie-downs…or just bolt on as many lights as you can possibly find.

1 review for Surly 8-Pack Rack 2.0

As is typical of Surly, it’s heavy for what it is (650g or so, similar to a Tubus rear rack) and expensive. Also typical I believe is that it is solid, functional, durable and repairable in the unlikely event that I manage to break it. Because I have One Bike to Rule Them All, l wanted something versatile- I can strap a large daypack on this and ride to a bushwalk, for example. Or a drybag for my camping gear, without playing Twister with hoses and cables per a handlebar harness (which seems more designed for pretty hipster pics rather than user friendliness). It is a large enough platform that a bulky bag can still be easily stabilised, so I don’t feel the need for the extra area and weight of the 24 Pack. However, courtesy of the eyelets, you could easily add and remove a larger tray or basket with ease.

I chose this over a standard rack due to the large deck for top loading. Panniers get trashed when XC touring aka bikepacking, so I use this in combo with some Blackburn cargo cages mounted towards the rear of the fork legs, which seems to counteract the low speed wheel flop caused by a load in front of the steering axis.

I anticipate enjoying the quality and simplicity long after I’ve forgotten the price. Happy cycling everyone.

Has Surly fixed the safety issue identified with these and the 24-pack, or do we know anything more about it?

  3. Huw

Hi Greg, Yes – this issue has been resolved. The 8-Pack and 24-Pack both come with additional hardware that prevents the rack sliding forward in the event of the primary hardware coming loose. We also have the hardware to supply (free of charge) to people who bought the racks prior to the hardware being updated. Cheers, Huw

  4. Thomas

Hi there, just wondering when these racks will likely be in stock again?

  5. Mik Efford

Hi Thomas, looking like they won’t be back in stock until around December!
