The Surly cassette-type cog are designed to fit on standard Shimano compatible freehub bodies. These cogs have a tall tooth profile that is essential for preventing chain skip from the extra torque a singlespeed drivetrain encounters. At the base, the cogs are 4.35mm wide, which allows you to stack a few of them up for a simplified multi-speed drivetrain. Use a 9-speed derailleur if you do that.
