The Sunliner model is a result of requests from two different groups of customers, people that wanted a lighter weight Prospector with a derailleur instead of the 14 speed Rohloff internally geared hub (also to reduce the cost of the overall build), and people who wanted a Stargazer but preferred riding with a flat bar. We’ve built both derailleur Prospectors and flat bar Stargazers, but neither of those bikes were really optimized for those respective types of builds. The Sunliner keeps with the Tumbleweed philosophy of an extraordinarily high quality frame and fork with generous tire clearance, clean cable routing, thoughtful off road touring geometry and feature set (for example, chain stays long enough that your heels won't hit panniers on a standard rack, tougher M6 rack mounting points on the frame) and the ability for a rider to have an upright riding position (even tall riders who are used to riding bikes too small for them).
The Sunliner fits squarely between the Prospector and the Stargazer, depending on what attributes you're considering. The Sunliner uses the same geometry and sizing as the Prospector, but with the Boost axle standards, lighter weight tube set and non suspension corrected design of the Stargazer. We've found that there is such a small percentage of customers running suspension on the Prospector (for long distance bike packers having a steel fork with dedicated mounts for racks and cargo is far more important than a suspension or carbon fork) that it would be more useful to give the Sunliner a huge front triangle for extra frame bag space and keep the super versatile steel fork.
